Marie Curie Research Training Network JETSET invites you to the 5th School on High Performance Computing in Astrophysics being held January 8th - 13th 2008 at the Centre for Astronomy, National University of Ireland Galway, (NUIG) and organised jointly by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and the NUIG Centre for Astronomy.
The number of participants is limited to 80. The school is open to postgraduate students and young researchers outside the network. Limited support may be available for such participants with insufficient financial support from their home institution (preference will be given to those proposing a poster or an oral contribution). The registration fee for the school is €120 and is payable in cash at the registration desk.
Scientific Aim
Stellar jets are complex physical systems. Their study necessitates incorporating nonlinear effects which occur on a wide variety of length and timescales. As a result of this one of the primary methods used to study the physics of jets is numerical simulations. Since the physics is so complex, the problems are large enough to make mandatory the use of high performance computing techniques. Further, modern astrophysical datasets associated with observations are becoming so large that standard analysis methods are no longer efficient.
The School will address the methods used to simulate astrophysical jets and to derive useful information from large datasets, focusing on techniques involving high performance computing.
Programme
The school will consist of a series of lectures with emphasis on astrophysical problems where possible, including a course on MPI, an introduction to grid technology, lectures on adaptive mesh refinement techniques and sessions on virtual observatories and analysis of large datasets.
Shorter presentations will address applications of HPC to astrophysical problems such as 3D radiative transfer, large scale jet simulations and jet stability, among others. During the school, the participants will have access to a computer lab to facilitate hands-on exercises. There will also be a limited number of contributed oral presentations from the participants.
DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS NOVEMBER 30TH 2007 OR EARLIER IF THE LIMIT IS EXCEEDED.
